Main Offender

In 2001, rock music was supposed to be in trouble. Grunge had burned out. Nu-metal was everywhere. Then five Swedish kids in matching black and white suits walked onto stages and played faster and tighter than anyone around them. The Hives came from Fagersta, Sweden. Population 12,000. They had been playing since 1993. They had an album called Veni Vidi Vicious. “Main Offender” was the single. Two minutes and thirty-five seconds. They did not need more time. They never do.

Every song on Veni Vidi Vicious was credited to Randy Fitzsimmons. A manager. A mysterious figure who allegedly sent the band instructions and compositions from an unknown location. No one could find him. No one had met him. For years the press chased the story. Randy Fitzsimmons turned out to be Nicholaus Arson. Guitarist. Founding member. The band’s own songwriter writing under a name that sounds like a crime boss in a 1970s film. He was not hiding. He was building a mythology. The suits were part of it. The stage names were part of it. “Main Offender” was part of it. You are crime. The Hives are law.

The Hives arrived at the same moment as The Strokes, The White Stripes, and The Vines. The press called it a garage rock revival. The Hives were the outliers. Everyone else looked like they had not slept. The Hives looked like they had been pressed and starched for inspection. They played the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards. They headlined festivals across Europe and the United States. They have never stopped. More than thirty years since forming in a small Swedish city, they still wear the suits. They still play like the set might be their last. The Hives made the case that rock music is not just a feeling. It is a performance. Nobody performs it better.
